Brother Arthur Lewis was born and education in Los Angeles, and attended Jefferson High School and UCLA. He was initiated into Alpha Delta Chapter in March of 1946, when Alpha Delta was the citywide chapter at the time. He later became a charter member of Gamma Xi Chapter and now is a member of Beta Psi Lambda Chapter. He is the father of six children and he has ten grandchildren. Three of his sons are also members of Alpha Phi Alpha.

After graduating from college with a major in Accounting, he worked for the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Co. as a data processor. From there he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 and served as a member of the Army Audit Agency for two years while assigned to the Oakland Army Base. Upon return to public life he worked as an auditor for the U.S. Defense Dept. and the Dept. of Energy for 30 years, until he retired.

As a business man, Brother Lewis operated an Orange Julius franchise and later a coin operated vending machine business specializing in cigarette machines and juke boxes. In addition he started an income tax preparation business on a part­time basis in 1959 and is still active in the business today.
